The Co-operative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE) studentships are designed to give students experience outside a purely academic environment, of joint supervision by The Open University and e2v technologies, and of guidance from an experienced engineer with industrial relevance.
Students finishing the PhD training all possess transferable skills and the expertise gained leads to successful careers within industry, academic research and space agencies. Doctoral Program in Energy Science


The international Doctoral Program in Energy Science is offered to provide
foreign students and researchers, who have a Master’s degree (or
equivalent), an opportunity to further their studies toward a Doctoral
degree at Kyoto University. In this Doctoral Program, Japanese proficiency
is not required since students can obtain the necessary credits by choosing
ones among a variety of subjects presented in English and their research
works are also supervised in English. An evaluation of eligibility for

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work on the modelling of the optical properties of nitride based quantum well light emitting diodes (LEDs). These devices will form the heart of the next generation of lighting for every area of commercial and domestic lighting, saving up to 80% of total electricity. Before this promise can be fulfilled further understanding is required of the fundamental processes that determine and limit the efficiency of these LEDs.
You will join a collaborative program funded by EPSRC involving researchers from the Universities of Manchester, Cambridge, Bath and Strathclyde and will be expected to assist in the interpretation of experimental data on the optical properties of LEDs and quantum well structures. You should have previous experience of providing theoretical input or computational modelling into experimental programs and hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD or equivalent in Physics or a closely related field. You should have good communication skills, a demonstrable publication record and knowledge of computational techniques. Knowledge of and experience in semiconductor physics or devices is advantageous.

This fellowship provides a platform for exceptionally qualified researchers, aiming to extend their scientific work to include specific social and cultural questions and perspectives. Fellows are expected to break across boundaries between different disciplines, establishing stimulating links and developing new approaches. Ideally fellows pursue unconventional projects in new areas of science, engineering and social sciences.

Project: Maximizing the Efficiency of Solar Energy Harvesting in Luminescent Solar Concentrators
Applications are invited for a fully-funded, four-year PhD studentship, at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University College London (UCL) in nanophotonics for solar cell applications. The studentship is available for immediate start and is supported by an EU Marie-Curie fellowship and a UCL Grand Challenges Impact Award. The main objective of the present PhD project is to reduce the cost of harvesting solar energy in Luminescent Solar Concentrators (LSCs) by exploiting advanced nanophotonic concepts and by doing so, to contribute to the global efforts for economically viable - carbon free energy generation from sustainable and renewable resources. The work to be undertaken is multidisciplinary, crossing the boundaries between electrodynamics modelling, material science and nanotechnology fabrication.

Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong’s institutions.

JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for ABDs and recent PhDs provides promising and highly qualified researchers in the humanities and social sciences with the opportunity to conduct extended research at leading universities and research institutions in Japan. Fellowship terms are for single continuous stays from 1 to 12 months (short-term) or 12 to 24 months (long-term).
Short-term fellowships must commence between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013, and long-term fellowships must commence between April 1, 2012 and September 30, 2012. JSPS currently provides round-trip international airfare for fellows originating in the U.S., insurance coverage for accidents and illness, a monthly stipend of ¥362,000 for PhDs (¥200,000 for ABDs), a settling-in allowance of ¥200,000, and eligibility for an additional ¥1,500,000 annually for research expenses for stays of 12 to 24 months.

Faculty Position for Chemistry

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY
CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT
TENURE TRACK

The Chemistry department at Whitworth University provides a stimulating environment in which students can use the latest technology in course and lab work, and also have opportunities for advanced research. The department provides faculty and students access to modern instrumentation including a multinuclear 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, GC/MS, DSC, a high through-put HPLC system with autosampler, a fluorimeter, several UV-Vis and IR spectrometers, and various other instruments supporting individual research projects. The chemistry department is located in the newly opened Robinson Science Hall, a 63,000 ft. facility with state-of-the-art laboratories, instrumentation and research facilities for students and faculty. Classrooms are equipped with computerized teaching stations and demonstration podiums. The small class sizes typical in the department encourage students to become active learners in their own education, and helps foster close relationships between students and faculty members.

The Chemistry department is thriving and growing as supported by student demand and the University's strategic plan. In the last few years, the number of chemistry students has increased 60% and typically 15-20 students graduate with a chemistry major each year. In addition, several new faculty have joined the department, bringing a fresh perspective and energy to the program.

PRIMARY TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary teaching responsibilities include Organic Chemistry courses and laboratories in the fall and spring semesters; other teaching assignments may include the Biochemistry course or labs, a non-majors level or advanced chemistry topics course in applicant's area of expertise during the January Term; additional teaching assignments may include bioorganic (for health science students), CORE 350, seminar, or other laboratories. The typical teaching load is one course and four laboratories or two courses and two laboratories each fall and spring semester and a three-credit course in January.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in departmental and university-wide governance, faculty development activities, and advising. Establish and maintain a viable research program that can incorporate undergraduate students.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Ph.D. in Chemistry (ABD with degree completion by August 15, 2012 may be considered)
2. The ability and desire to teach sophomore level organic chemistry and non-majors courses as well as upper division electives
3. Demonstrated potential as a university level teacher, possessing strong relational skills with students and colleagues
4. A commitment to science education in a liberal arts setting and working with a broad student population to explore the nature of the scientific enterprise and the interaction between science and society
5. Demonstrated potential to produce research and scholarship
6. A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning
7. Must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States by the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue to work legally for the duration of a tenure-track appointment
8. Must be able to communicate effectively in English

Rajat Jayanti Vigyan Sancharak Fellowships

  Applications are invited for twenty “Rajat Jayanti Vigyan Sancharak Fellowships”  instituted by National Council for Science and Technology Communication, Department of Science & Technology.  The fellowship recognizes Science Communicators with uniformly brilliant academic record and supports innovative work in selected scientific institutions/universities/S&T based voluntary organizations under the guidance of a senior science communicator.  These are full time fellowships and cannot be taken up with any other assignment. The candidates below 35 years on 31.12.2011 (relaxable by 5 years for Women candidates) must possess a graduation or higher degree in science, engineering, medical science, agriculture, information technology, mass communication, etc. from a recognized university. The duration of the fellowship will be for one year and will comprise a Stipend of Rs.12,000/- per month (Rs.16,000/- in case of a Ph.D. holders), an annual contingency of Rs.30,000/- and travel grant of Rs.15,000/-. Mentors will receive an Honorarium of Rs.20,000/- in a year. PhD Position in Image Processing in UK


PhD Studentship –  Real-time 3D Computer Vision and Image Processing for
Automotive and Autonomous Robotics Applications

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD student to work in the
School of Engineering on the   topic of developing real-time 3D computer
vision techniques within the area of autonomous robotic guidance and
automotive driver assistance systems in collaboration with TRW Conekt
(http://www.conekt.co.uk/).
Intelligent vehicle sensing has seen increasing interest and application
over the past decades with a wide range of applications in both driver
assistance systems and autonomous guidance systems alike. This PhD
project builds upon the ongoing theme of work within the Cranfield
research team on intelligent vehicle sensing such autonomous route
proving, road sign detection, headlight tracking, GPS navigation
augmentation and automotive stereo vision. This project specifically
looks to leverage recent advances in real-time video mosaicking and
automotive stereo vision for application to real-time on-vehicle 3D
vision for autonomous navigation and scene understanding. The project
will take the form of an industrial CASE studentship with the student
primarily based at Cranfield University whilst working at TRW Conekt
premises for placement periods throughout the PhD – including an initial
6-month placement at their industrial research base in Solihull.  This
represents a very good opportunity for a candidate interested in an
applied research career, comprising both academic and industrial
placement elements within the 3.5 year study programme with an initial
pre-project 6-month industrial placement.
TRW Conekt is an operating business within TRW Automotive, a Tier 1
global supplier of braking and steering systems, airbags and driver
assistance systems in the automotive market. Conekt specialises in
embedded vehicle sensing and control systems, playing a leading role in
the research and development of radar, vision sensing and data fusion
solutions for future autonomous vehicles and driver assistance systems.
Active in UK and European collaborative research programmes since the
early 1990s, Conekt is currently engaged in at least six programmes with
a vision systems theme for defence, automotive and intelligent
transportation systems applications (http://www.conekt.co.uk/).

illustrates both work within the automotive vision domain and other
computer vision / image processing projects in the group.
The Applied Mathematics and Computing Group (AMAC) is part of the School
of Engineering at Cranfield University. It specialises in the
application of mathematical and computational techniques to engineering
problems – including the domain of applied image and signal processing.
AMAC has been involved in image processing activities for ~20 years.
Prior projects include real-time night-vision systems for major
automotive manufacturers, pan-European driver monitoring/awareness
projects together with a range of medical vision and security
surveillance work. Recent work includes 3D computer vision for object
recognition and inspection, automated ground robot and aerial target
detection (MOD Grand Challenge Winners 2008, Stellar Team รข URL:
http://www.science.mod.uk/engagement/grand_challenge/grand_challenge.aspx),
airport baggage security screening and on-going automotive computer
vision using low-cost on-board sensors. In general we are concerned with
the novel application of image processing and computer vision approaches
for the effective extraction of visual information from images.
Entry Requirements: Applicants should have good background in any of
computer science, artificial intelligence, electrical engineering or a
related discipline with a strong programming ability in a high level
language (preferably C/C++, Java or Matlab). Candidates should hold at
least a 2:1 honours degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Electrical
Engineering or a related  discipline (Masters degree a plus). In
addition applicants would ideally have a good knowledge of mathematics
(especially algebra, statistics and geometry) and a strong motivation
towards PhD study. Prior experience in computer vision, image processing
and/or machine learning is a plus although not essential.
Funding: This studentship is only available to UK/EU nationals.
Studentship awards are available to cover both tuition fees and a
stipend in the form of a tax-free subsistence bursary for UK applicants
(in line with EPSRC
recommendations,http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/Pages/minimumpay.aspx).
UK applicants would be eligible for both tuition fees and stipend
maintenance support.
Scholarship awards are also available to cover tuition fees only for
EU-applicants.  EU-applicants are eligible for fees only support unless
they can demonstrate a relevant connection to the UK, in which case they
should qualify for full tuition fees and maintenance support.
Unfortunately non-EU applicants are not eligible for this award unless
they can demonstrate a relevant connection to the UK.

PhD at Singapore on MIT Project

PhD scholarships for projects within the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research & Technology (SMART), Future Urban Mobility (FM) IRG, to be supervised by NTU and MIT faculty.

The Future Urban Mobility (FM) Interdisciplinary Research Group is the fourth and most recent IRG established within the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). The FM IRG`s activities began officially on July 1, 2010.
The goal of the FM IRG is to develop, in and beyond Singapore, new paradigms for the planning, design and operation of future urban mobility systems. Innovative urban mobility systems, aimed at both passengers and freight, will materially enhance sustainability and societal well-being on a global scale.
This is a particularly opportune time to address this topic due to a confluence of relevant developments: major advances in computing, communications, and sensing technologies; the great progress that has been made in recent years in our ability to model, evaluate and optimize urban mobility systems; the growing importance of environmental sustainability issues; the aging of physical infrastructure in developed countries and the need for massive new infrastructure in less developed ones; and the vast economic stimulus that can be provided by the modernization and renewal of urban mobility systems worldwide.
The FM IRG will:
* harness and enhance promising networked computing and control (NCC) technology-enabled innovations that may contribute to improved future urban mobility;
* develop decision models that can be applied to support various novel mobility concepts, such as the pervasive use of real-time information, mobility-on-demand services and green logistics;
* investigate the potential and impacts of these innovations and decision models; and
* assess their implications for urban development and urban planning organizations and institutions.
The concrete project is the following:
Real-time Path Tracking/Predictions and On-Demand Route Guidance Under Uncertainty
Develop algorithms that use real-time data to (i) track and predict paths in dynamic transportation networks, and (ii) provide on-demand route guidance under uncertainty.
