Opportunity for PhD

The Department of Automatic Control, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, seeks PhD students in Electrical Engineering.
KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning and environmental engineering. KTH has 13,300 full-year undergraduate students, 1,500 postgraduate students and 3,900 employees. KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University.

The School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education in the fields of electrical engineering, information and communication technology, systems engineering, electrical power engineering, and plasma physics. The School research projects are carried out in close collaboration with Swedish industry and universities world-wide. The School has strong undergraduate and graduate programs.
The Automatic Control Lab. conducts fundamental research in networked control systems, control of communication systems, systems biology and system identification. Industrial projects involve both national and international partners such as ABB, Ericsson, Scania, and Microsoft.
A major part of the research is conducted within the ACCESS Linnaeus Centre, Sweden’s largest university research centre in networked systems, and in EU-projects in collaboration with European industry and universities. KTH has a large academic network and collaborate with researchers at Caltech, ETH Zurich, MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford, among others.
The school is looking for 1-3 PhD students with a strong background and interest in mathematics, control, optimization, networking, game theory, and systems theory. The proposed research is centered on the modeling, the analysis, and the design of decentralized control and optimization mechanisms for structured and information-constrained large-scale systems. PhD students are expected (i) to contribute to lay the foundations towards a theory of such systems, (ii) to devise practical control and optimization solutions with specific applications in communication networks, traffic networks, and smart-grids. The research will be supported by two existing projects within the areas of resource allocation in wireless networks, and of optimization of sustainable infrastructures, respectively.
Qualifications
Highly motivated individuals;
Holding an MSc degree in electrical engineering, engineering physics, computer science or similar;
The candidates should have excellent grades and very good skills in oral and written communication;
To be ready to contribute to an international research group and a scientific research agenda of major importance for European industry and society.
Employment
PhD positions are intended for those who pursue their own doctoral studies. The positions include about 80% research and 20% teaching assistance duties. The salary is based on the existing employment agreement for PhD position at the School of Electrical Engineering.
Application
The application shall include a CV, a brief statement on why the applicant wishes to pursue PhD studies, contact information to three references, the degree certificate, and official transcripts of records.
The application should be sent by email to
