Research Associate in UK

The University of Manchester
Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre
Research Associate in Chemical Biology / Molecular Biology
£29,099 – £35,788 p.a. Ref: EPS/12186
Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work within the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (MIB), to form part of a BBSRC funded project, concerned with the development of new methods for bioorthogonal site-selective protein immobilisation and labelling.
The project aims to develop a new method for enzyme catalysed site-selective covalent protein immobilisation that can be used in the production of protein arrays for proteomics, drug screening and other applications. You will engineer the enzyme(s) mediating protein immobilisation to improve their activity and bio-orthogonality, allowing highly selective immobilisation of tagged proteins from cell lysates. The application of this new bioorthogonal methodology for site-specific protein labelling will also be explored.
You must hold or be about to obtain a PhD, or have equivalent postdoctoral experience, in Chemical Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related science. You should also hold a degree (BSc or Masters) in Biological Science or Chemistry with relevant practical laboratory experience, or extensive and relevant work experience in a similar technical or scientific role. Good communication and IT skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively on multidisciplinary research are also essential.
Application forms and further particulars are available from our vacancies page http://www.manchester.ac.uk/jobs or by contacting +44 (0) 161 275 8837 or email:eps-hr@manchester.ac.uk quoting the reference number.
Closing date: 30 June 2011.

Post Doc Opening in Denmark

A two-year fellowship is available in the Bioinformatics Group, Department of Molecular Medicine, Aarhus University, Denmark. The position is available to commence September 1, 2011.
On the one hand, next generation sequencing (NGS) has made it possible to experimentally interrogate RNA secondary structure transcriptome-wide. On the other, there is a dramatic increase in the amount of comparative data available for RNA secondary structure prediction. As part of Centre for Applied Transcriptomics (http://rna.binf.ku.dk/), the research focus of this position is to improve the annotation of human RNA structure by integrating the analysis of NGS-based experimental data and comparative genomics data. Computationally, the focus would likely be on extending existing locally developed phylo-SCFG-based methods.
The Bioinformatics Group of Associate Professor Jakob Skou Pedersen uses computational methods to characterize non-coding RNAs and cis-regulatory RNA structures in health and disease. This analysis is based on both comparative genomics data and in-house as well as externally produced NGS data. The department houses an NGS facility that includes both GA2 and HiSeq 2000 Illumina sequencers. The computational infrastructure includes an official mirror of the UCSC Genome Browser and its underlying database (http://moma.ki.au.dk/genome-mirror/). The group collaborates closely with experimental groups both on experimental genomic screens and validation of specific functional hypothesis on ncRNAs or cis-regulatory structures.
Qualifications
The successful candidate is expected to be involved in both the development of computational methods, their application, data analysis, and experimental collaborations. We seek a highly motivated person, capable of working fairly independently.
For consideration, applicants must:
  • Have a PhD in bioinformatics, statistics or a similar field
  • Be experienced in handling and analyzing genomic data
  • Be experienced with programming and be familiar with LINUX/UNIX
  • Have excellent English speaking, reading, and writing skills
  • Have published in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals
Skills of additional interest include
  • Experience in statistics and probabilistic models/machine learning
  • Experience with RNA secondary structure modeling
  • Ability to program in C++ and Python
Salary and terms of employment
The successful applicant will be hired as a postdoctoral fellow for an initial 2-year period. The possibility exists for extension of this initial period. While negotiation for salary supplement is possible, the starting salary level is currently DKK 31.400 a month (approx. US $ 6000) plus contribution to a pension scheme. The conditions of employment are based on the agreement between The Ministry of Finance and The Federation of Graduate Employee Unions. Remuneration will include an additional pension-based bonus of DKK 37.600 (october-97 level). Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they have not lived in Denmark the last 3 years.
Application procedure
The application should include a curriculum vitae, a full list of the applicant’s scientific publications showing which publications the applicant wishes to be included in the assessment, and information about teaching experience. The assessment committee can decide to include material which has not been in the evaluation. In this event, the applicant will be informed and asked to send the material, or else to withdraw the application.
Applications are encouraged regardless of age, gender, race, religion or ethnic background.
Besides, The Faculty of Health Sciences refers to the following guidelines and memorandums, which can be found at www.health.au.dk at Nyheder og stillinger → vejledninger:
  • Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
  • Information on qualification requirements and job content is found in Memorandum of Jobstructure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities.
  • Guidelines concerning writing an application.
For further details about the position, please contact Associate Professor Jakob Skou Pedersen (jakob.skou@ki.au.dk).

Acedmic job for Assistant Professor

Applied Sciences
The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,400 students. The Catalysis Engineering Section, a participant in the national research schools for catalysis (NIOK) and process technology (OSPT) and the prestigious top school NRSC Catalysis, focuses on novel concepts in the application of catalysis. CE's international hallmark is its integral, multidisciplinary approach in multi-phase and multi-functional operations, through the application of structured materials, leading to a rational design of and precision in catalytic processes, marrying catalysis with engineering. Research activities range from fundamental to applied on themes addressing socio-economic issues and industrial topics (energy, sustainability, renewables, environment, process intensification). We would like to complement our team with a Chemical Engineer or Physicist interested in the characterization of functional materials "at work" by applying operando techniques in combination with molecular computational methods.

Job description
We expect the successful candidate to establish a research programme of international repute and, as principal investigator, act as thesis advisor to PhD students. In the area of education, the candidate will supervise students at the graduate and undergraduate levels and provide effective, engaging teaching at the BSc and MSc levels on topics such as catalysis, process technology and reactor engineering. The candidate is expected to master Dutch within a reasonable period.
