Denmark Technical University: PhD Position

The Wind Energy Division at Risø National Laboratory, Technical University of Denmark (Risø DTU) is seeking a PhD student for the Wind Energy Systems programme (WES), working in the research theme “Wind Power Integration and Control”.

The PhD project is financially supported by the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research (SDC), which is a joint center for research between eight Danish universities, the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology &Innovation and the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS). The overall aim of SDC is to promote and strengthen collaboration between Danish and Chinese research and learning environments for the benefit of both countries. For background information please see here.
The WES programme has well-established research activities in wind power system integration, modeling and control of wind turbines and wind farms concepts, electrical components and grid connection and large-scale wind energy penetration. For background information plese see here.
Project description
The objective of this project is to analyze and assess the possibilities to exploit wind power plants capabilities to support the power system in a similar way as a conventional power plant does. The project focuses on the development and modeling of different technically viable solutions, which increase the ability of wind farms to provide system services.
The research topic of the PhD project is of high relevance for the integration of future large scale wind power into the power system, dealing with the challenges of operation, modeling and control of power systems with significant amounts of wind power. Research on wind farms system services capabilities may reduce the need for running of various conventional power plants in the system, in the future, for shorter or longer periods, when a large share of wind power into the power system is expected.
Qualifications
Applicants to the PhD position must have:
  • a  master’s degree in engineering (e.g. Electrical engineering or Power system engineering) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering
  • strong control background
  • knowledge on wind turbine models
  • good mathematical and programming skills for analytical and modeling purposes
  • experience in modeling and control of power system is an advantage
Furthermore, fluency in communicating, reading and writing English is required.
We offer
We offer a challenging career with the possibility to play an active role in the development of wind power in one of the largest wind energy research centers worldwide. DTU is a leading technical university in northern Europe and benchmarks with the best universities in the world.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval and the candidate will be enrolled in the PhD programme at DTU and in parallel at the Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Science. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
The place of employment is at Risø DTU, Frederiksborgvej 399, Roskilde, Denmark. The student will have the obligation to spend minimum 6 months of its study in China during the three years study.
