Doctoral Program in Energy Science


The international Doctoral Program in Energy Science is offered to provide
foreign students and researchers, who have a Master’s degree (or
equivalent), an opportunity to further their studies toward a Doctoral
degree at Kyoto University. In this Doctoral Program, Japanese proficiency
is not required since students can obtain the necessary credits by choosing
ones among a variety of subjects presented in English and their research
works are also supervised in English. An evaluation of eligibility for
admission will be made on the basis of the documents submitted to our
Student Affairs Section, Administration Office.

<*Five students* will be admitted with a scholarship from the Japanese
Government.>
SCHOLARSHIP
- Allowance: *153,000 to 156,000yen* per month for at most 36 months
(subject to change depending upon the annual budget of each year)
- Travel to and from Japan: Economy-class *round trip airfare*
- School fees: Exemption from the entrance and tuition fees
ELIGIBILITY
- Nationality: Any of the countries with which Japan has official
diplomatic relations
- Age:* under 35 years* of age as of April 1, 2012
- Academic qualifications: *Master’s degree* or equivalent (by the end
of September, 2012)
- Language ability: Good command of English (Japanese is not required)

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work on the modelling of the optical properties of nitride based quantum well light emitting diodes (LEDs). These devices will form the heart of the next generation of lighting for every area of commercial and domestic lighting, saving up to 80% of total electricity. Before this promise can be fulfilled further understanding is required of the fundamental processes that determine and limit the efficiency of these LEDs.
You will join a collaborative program funded by EPSRC involving researchers from the Universities of Manchester, Cambridge, Bath and Strathclyde and will be expected to assist in the interpretation of experimental data on the optical properties of LEDs and quantum well structures. You should have previous experience of providing theoretical input or computational modelling into experimental programs and hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD or equivalent in Physics or a closely related field. You should have good communication skills, a demonstrable publication record and knowledge of computational techniques. Knowledge of and experience in semiconductor physics or devices is advantageous.

Society in Science – The Branco Weiss Fellowship awards postdocs with a personal grant that enables them to carry out their research anywhere in the world, at any institution, for up to five years. The program is administered by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH).

This fellowship provides a platform for exceptionally qualified researchers, aiming to extend their scientific work to include specific social and cultural questions and perspectives. Fellows are expected to break across boundaries between different disciplines, establishing stimulating links and developing new approaches. Ideally fellows pursue unconventional projects in new areas of science, engineering and social sciences.


Eligibility
The ideal applicant has the competencies to design a courageous and scientifically rigorous research project which blazes new trails, profiting from the freedom uniquely offered by the fellowship.

You are eligible if:

• You officially hold a PhD on February 1, 2012
• You have a record of outstanding scientific achievement
• You can demonstrate a clear and distinct societal component in your research proposal

You will increase your chances of a successful application if:

• Your proposed inquiry meets a high standard of scientific quality

Timelines
Every proposal is rated on its merits by the Society in Science directorate and strategy committee. Short-listed candidates are invited for personal interviews, to be held in Zurich, Switzerland. 
The following timeline applies for the 2012 fellowship intake:

• April 2012: notification and invitation for a personal interview sent to final selection of candidates; notification sent to refused candidates
• June 2012: interviewing of candidates with the directorate and the strategy committee in Zurich, Switzerland, and final selection of fellows
• 1 September to 31 December 2012: fellows commence research projects

Project: Maximizing the Efficiency of Solar Energy Harvesting in Luminescent Solar Concentrators
Applications are invited for a fully-funded, four-year PhD studentship, at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University College London (UCL) in nanophotonics for solar cell applications. The studentship is available for immediate start and is supported by an EU Marie-Curie fellowship and a UCL Grand Challenges Impact Award. The main objective of the present PhD project is to reduce the cost of harvesting solar energy in Luminescent Solar Concentrators (LSCs) by exploiting advanced nanophotonic concepts and by doing so, to contribute to the global efforts for economically viable - carbon free energy generation from sustainable and renewable resources. The work to be undertaken is multidisciplinary, crossing the boundaries between electrodynamics modelling, material science and nanotechnology fabrication.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme


Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong’s institutions.

Eligibility



Candidates who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the following eight institutions, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience, and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.

For awardees who need more than three years to complete their PhD studies, additional support may be provided by the chosen institutions.
